What Is OOH Advertising? A Practical Guide for Jamaican Businesses
By Ad Hub Team · September 18, 2026 · 6 min read

Out-of-home advertising, usually shortened to OOH, is any advertising that reaches people while they are out of their homes: on the road, in a shopping centre, in an office lobby or in a waiting area. If you have ever noticed a billboard on your commute or a screen in a mall, you have already met OOH.
For a small business, an agency or a marketing manager in Jamaica, OOH is one of the few ways to put a message in front of a whole community at once. This guide explains what OOH is, the main formats, how it works in practice, and how to decide whether it is right for you.
What counts as out-of-home advertising?
OOH covers a wide range of formats. The easiest way to think about it is in two groups.
Outdoor advertising is placed in public spaces:
- Billboards along highways, main roads and busy junctions, from large-format boards to smaller street-level panels.
- Transit advertising on and around buses, bus stops and shelters.
- Street furniture such as benches, signs and public information panels.
- Wall murals and building wraps that turn a building into a message.
Indoor (place-based) advertising is placed inside venues where people spend time:
- Lobby and reception screens in office buildings, hotels and clinics.
- Mall and plaza displays, from digital totems to posters.
- Waiting-area screens where people naturally have a few minutes to look.
- Kiosks and directory screens that people interact with.
Both outdoor and indoor OOH can be static (a printed poster or vinyl) or digital (an LED or LCD screen).
Static vs digital OOH
Static OOH is a fixed printed image. It is bold, simple and always on, and it is ideal for one clear message you want repeated for weeks or months, such as a brand name, a launch or a location.
Digital OOH (DOOH) uses screens. Because the content is digital, it can rotate several advertisers, change quickly, and show different messages at different times of day. That makes it well suited to time-sensitive offers, events and campaigns you want to adjust as you go.
Neither is better. The right choice depends on your goal, your message and your budget.
How OOH advertising works in practice
Whether you book directly with a Media Owner/Vendor or through a marketplace, the process is broadly the same.
- Pick your goal. Awareness, a launch, an event, driving people to a store, or supporting a digital campaign.
- Choose the location and audience. Think about who passes by, when, and how long they have to look. A roadside board reaches commuters and drivers; a lobby screen reaches office workers and visitors who have time.
- Choose the format. Static or digital, large or small, outdoor or indoor.
- Design to the specification. Every board and screen has its own size, resolution and aspect ratio (and, for digital screens, an ad duration). A file that does not match will be rejected, so get the specs before you start designing.
- Book and schedule. Agree the dates and duration with the Media Owner/Vendor, pay, and send your approved artwork.
- Run and verify. The Media Owner/Vendor puts your ad live. Ask for proof that it ran, such as a photo of the ad on the board or a proof-of-play report for a digital screen.
What does OOH advertising cost?
There is no single price, because several things move it:
- Location. A busy city junction will not cost the same as a quiet road.
- Size and format. Larger boards and digital screens usually cost more than small static panels.
- Duration. Most OOH is sold by the week or the month, and longer bookings often come with better terms.
- Demand. Prime locations are booked well ahead.
- Production. Printing and installation for static boards, or design and resizing for digital.
The most useful habit is to ask for the full total up front, including anything on top of the rental price, so you can compare like with like.
Is OOH right for your business?
OOH tends to work well when you want to:
- Build local awareness of a new business, shop or brand.
- Reach a whole community rather than a narrow segment.
- Support a launch or event with a highly visible message.
- Reinforce digital and social campaigns so people see you online and in the real world.
It is a weaker fit when you need to reach a very specific niche, or your message needs a lot of explanation. A billboard is read in a few seconds, so the idea has to be simple.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Too many words. Aim for a handful of words and one clear idea.
- Low contrast and small text. If it cannot be read at a glance from a distance, it will not work.
- Ignoring the specs. Wrong size or resolution means delays and rejections.
- Booking for too short a time. Repetition builds recall, so give people the chance to see the ad more than once.
- No call to action. Tell people what to do next: a short web address, a QR code, a name they can search.
- Not checking it ran. Ask for proof.
Buying OOH in Jamaica today
Traditionally, buying OOH has meant phoning around to different Media Owners/Vendors, waiting for availability and quotes, and paying each vendor separately. It works, but it is slow, and it makes comparing options hard.
That is the problem Ad Hub was built to solve. Ad Hub is a marketplace where advertisers and agencies can browse outdoor and indoor screens across Jamaica, compare prices set by each Media Owner/Vendor, build one campaign in a single cart and pay once. Uploads are checked automatically against each screen's specifications, and every booking comes with proof of play.
If you own a billboard or a screen, you can list it for free and be discovered by advertisers and agencies island-wide.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a permit to advertise on a billboard?
When you rent space from an established Media Owner/Vendor, they are responsible for their structures and the approvals that go with them, so ask them to confirm. Different rules apply if you plan to put up your own sign, so check with your local authority first.
How long should an OOH campaign run?
Long enough for people to see it several times. Many campaigns run for a month or more, but the right length depends on your goal and budget.
Can I mix outdoor and indoor?
Yes, and it is often a smart combination: outdoor for broad reach, indoor for attentive, high-dwell audiences. Read more in our guide to the benefits of outdoor and indoor advertising.
